This is a project for an Italian restaurant named Lantana, inspired by the vibrant flowering plant native to Latin America. The restaurant was created by renovating an existing fitted-out space in a multi-tenant building, just a one-minute walk from Keio Hachioji Station.

CONCEPT

CONCEPT

The original space was transformed into a suitable restaurant by reconstructing the floor and installing a newly designed counter, while retaining the existing ceiling and walls.

The floor of the guest seating area has been finished with mortar-style tiles for ease of maintenance. Surrounding this area is a vivid pink carpet reminiscent of lantana in full blossom, and its edge is accented with a gold-colored strip to add a touch of elegance.

At the center of an irregular trapezoidal floor plan, the counter is positioned at an angle so that it does not run parallel to any of the surrounding sides. The 5-meter-long, 1.1-meter-wide countertop, serving as both a nine-seat dining table and a kitchen worktable, was designed with an off-rectangular shape to allow easy clearance for window-side seating and kitchen passageways. Each guest seat includes a drawer for storing cutlery.

The countertop’s subtle deformation is barely noticeable unless examined closely, as it is visually overwhelmed by the irregular shape of the surrounding space. This design reflects an attempt to go beyond the conventional values of architectural beauty, functionality, and comfort that are typically expected in restaurant design, creating a unique point through this slight deformation.
