AOYAMA STUDIO planned as a limited-time facility on the second floor of a multiple-tenant commercial building with shops and offices at Aoyama-dori Avenue in Minato-ku, Tokyo offers rental space specializing in displaying creative production and artworks with a theme of “an encounter with sensibility.”

CONCEPT

CONCEPT

We designed two rental spaces named Studio 164 and Studio 239 with respective staff-only areas and a shared lounge area in the typical office area with access floors and fluorescent lights.

Because the two rental spaces were planned to be used to display artworks, the existing ceiling height designed for office use was not high enough. So the existing ceiling was removed, except some areas, in order to expose the skeleton of the reinforced concrete building and secure a desired ceiling height. Meanwhile, it was decided that most of the existing carpet tiles durable enough for use would remain.

Generally, to design an attractive space, we think it is desirable to remove existing carpet tiles and replace them with another finishing material. In most cases, such action should be taken. But removing and discarding usable carpet tiles would generate unnecessary waste materials and increase environmental loads. However, the space covered entirely with carpet tiles would be unattractive.

So we used individualistic materials in various places such as single pipes and larch plywood for partitions that did not require acoustic performance, and lauan plywood for the floor around columns. As a result, even though we used carpet tiles, we successfully created an attractive space completely different from the previous office space.
